Community Profile: Meet Dr. Maureen Borghoff, Essence of Life Wellness Care

August 28, 2026

For over 26 years, Essence of Life Wellness Care has been a fixture in Bloor West Village, offering a gentle, nervous-system-focused approach to chiropractic care. We sat down with founder Dr. Maureen Borghoff to learn more about her practice, her philosophy on health, and what she loves most about the neighbourhood she calls home.

How did Essence of Life Wellness Care get its start—and who’s behind it today?

Essence of Life Wellness Care offers a very gentle, nervous-system-focused approach to chiropractic care, with no forceful twisting or cracking. The focus is on helping people feel more like themselves again, more connected, adaptable, and at home in their bodies. Over the years, it’s evolved into a place about helping people come home to themselves, physically, emotionally, and energetically. Today Dr. Maureen is joined by fellow chiropractor Dr. Sadie Hirschfield and the practice’s Chiropractic Health Assistant, Brooklyn, and together the team cares for children and families, busy professionals, and women navigating major life transitions.

What is the Discovery Session?

Every new patient starts with what Dr. Borghoff calls a Discovery Session, and it’s the one thing she recommends everyone try. Rather than assuming something is wrong, the session takes time to understand what a person’s body and nervous system have been adapting to: health history, posture, stress patterns, and where they’d actually like to be.

A Discovery Session gives people a chance to slow down and become curious about their body rather than frustrated with it.

What’s coming up this fall?

Education is central to how Essence of Life Wellness Care operates. They love teaching people how their bodies actually work, which is why they run regular classes and workshops on the nervous system, stress, healing, and healthy aging throughout the year. This fall brings two new sessions to the schedule:

  • 🔹 Everything About the Nervous System and Our Unique Approach: Tuesday, September 29th or Wednesday, September 30th at 6 pm
  • 🔹 9-week Movement Therapy series: starting Sept 23, every Wednesday at 6:30 pm (only 6 spots)

What does Dr. Maureen love about the Village?

The community, especially! After more than 26 years in the neighbourhood, Bloor West Village feels like home to Dr. Maureen. It shows in how many families she’s cared for across generations, and the friendships she’s built with patients and fellow business owners along the way.

“People stop and say hello [in Bloor West Village]. You know the shop owners. You watch people’s children grow up. Patients become friends, and then one day you’re caring for their children — or even another generation of their family.”, shared Dr. Maureen Borghoff

Any favourite local spots?

Dr. Maureen has plenty of favourites! Village Juicery is her go-to spot for lunch or happy hour. Her hidden-gem recommendation is Tomo Mutashita, a Japanese acupuncturist at Jane and Bloor.
